Anna Joyce Andress Named Lilac Queen 50 Years Ago

Fifty years ago, in 1959, Anna Joyce Andress served as the Island's Lilac Queen. She was born July 15, 1940, on Mackinac Island to Robert and Gladys Andress. She had one sister, Mary Rogers, and three brothers, Robert, David, and Richard. She was a practical nurse and married Al Putnam. The couple had four children, Ellen, Robert, Betsy, and Peter. In 1976, her daughter, Ellen Putnam, was crowned Lilac Queen. Anna Joyce disappeared in 1980 while crossing the ice by snowmobile from St. Ignace. Two of her granddaughters also served as queen, Sara Wessel in 2003 and Melissa Bunker in 2006. (Photograph courtesy of Ellen Putnam)
