Loren Horn

Loren Horn Loren Horn Loren W. Horn, 63, a lifelong resident of Mackinac Island, passed away Saturday evening August 1, 2015.

He was born October 31, 1951, to Archie and Roma (nee Squires) Horn in Petoskey.

Mr. Horn attended the Thomas W. Ferry School and Mackinac Island Public School, before entering the United States Army in January 1970. He was discharged as an E5 Sergeant after serving 1 year and 11 months.

He was employed as maintenance supervisor at the Iroquois Hotel on Mackinac Island for the past 23 years, working for the McIntire family.

Mr. Horn was a charter member of American Legion Post 299 on Mackinac Island. He was a member of the Mackinac Island Fire Department for many years, and he was an officer with the Mackinac Island Police Department in 1971, sharing duties with Glenn St. Onge.

He loved walking his dog, Harley, his companion for 13 years. He also loved making dinners for his family, friends, and fellow workers. Mr. Horn was a history buff, and he thoroughly knew the history of Mackinac Island’s buildings. He enjoyed photography. He loved traveling on large cruise ships and enjoyed arriving at ports and purchasing souvenirs for friends and family back home. A quiet person, Mr. Horn was a great father to his two sons and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by two sons, Benjamin Horn and Brad Horn, both of Mackinac Island; two brothers and their families, Roger and Elaine Horn and Jerry and Irene Horn, and two sisters and their families, Linda and Larry Belonga and Jennifer and the late Ernie Glashaw, all of St. Ignace.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Horn was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Horn, who died in 2003, and a baby sister, Mary, who died in 1959.

A memorial service was held Thursday, August 6, at 11 a.m. at Ste. Anne’s Church on Mackinac Island with Father Jim Williams officiating.

Burial was in Mackinac Island Cemetery, with members of American Legion Post 299 conducting graveside military rites.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace assisted the family with arrangements.
