Grand Hotel Continues ‘From My Favorite Poets To Yours’ Lectures

The annual poetry lecture series at Grand Hotel continues its summer schedule, “From My Favorite Poets To Yours.”

No prior knowledge is needed to benefit from the lectures. Free to the public, the yearly summer event has attracted both visitors and long-time residents of the Island. The lectures by James Lenfestey will take place weekly on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Grand Hotel’s Audubon Lounge.

The July 19 session will feature the experiences of Lorine Niedecker, a poet from 1903 to 1970 who wrote in poverty and isolation on the flooded backwaters of an island in the Rock River in Wisconsin.

“One’s first impulse, after awe, on reading her posthumous “The Granite Pail,” is a double dose of shame: shame at not being more familiar with her work; shame at ever having complained of the narrowness of one’s life,” reviewer Carolyn Kizer said.

July 19 – Lorine Niedecker (1903-1970), the greatest woman poet you never heard of, author of “My Life by Water” and more.

July 26 – R. S. Thomas (1913- 2000), Wales “strangest clergymen,” and “one the major English language European poets of the 20TH century.”

August 2 – Galway Kinnell (1927-2015) – Poet and Bear, author of “When A Man has Lived A Long Time Alone.”

August 9 – WS Merwin at 90 (1927–), a lifetime of grounded prophecy.

August 16 – Fleda Brown (1944–) in person – former Poet Laureate of Delaware, resident of Traverse City. The Woods Are On Fire, New and Selected poems, published spring 2017 by the Ted Kooser Contemporary Poetry series, U. of Nebraska Press.

August 23 – Read or recite your own favorite poems. Bring a favorite poem that inhabits your heart, delights your days, or troubles your sleep
