Dorothy ‘Dot’ Gillespie

Dorothy Ann “Dot” Gillespie, 78, of Hessel, formerly of Mackinac Island, passed away late Saturday evening, January 6, 2018, at War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Sault Ste. Marie, following a lingering illness. She had been on dialysis for 10 years, both in St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie.

She was born April 16, 1939, to James and Delia Elizabeth (nee Bazinaw) Perault on Mackinac Island.

A life resident of Mackinac Island, Mrs. Gillespie retired from Mackinac Island State Park after many years of service. She then worked at Alford’s Drug Store for a short time before moving to Hessel 10 years ago.

She was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Mrs. Gillespie loved to ice fish with her family. She will be missed by those who knew her, as she had many friends.

She is survived by two sons and their families, Deane Gillespie, Jr. of Hessel and James Gillespie of St. Ignace; two daughters and their families, Laurie and Reggie Gough of Cedarville and Florence Gillespie Cardinal, also of Cedarville; a son-in-law and his family, Jack Dehring of Mackinac Island, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother and his family, Jack Perault of Mackinac Island, and three sisters and their families, Kitty and Calvin Horn of Mackinac Island, Mary and Bill Benoit of Alanson, and Sue and Dr. Bill Chambers of Mackinac Island.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gillespie was preceded in death by her husband, Deane R. Gillespie, who died May 31, 2017; a daughter, Dorothy Dehring, who died January 4, 2017, and a sister, Sylvia Perault, who died October 17, 2016.

In accordance with her wishes, no services will be held at this time.

Burial of her ashes will be on Mackinac Island with her husband in the spring.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace assisted the family with arrangements.
