Lilac Festival 10k Race Kicks Off Mackinac Island Trio

The Lilac Festival Run/Walk, a 10-kilometer race that winds through the Island and draws participants ranging from seasoned runners to moms and dads and children, will depart from the starting line on Windermere Point at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9.

A traditional part of the Mackinac Island Lilac Festival since 1998, the race is organized by Run Mackinac and serves as a fundraiser for the Mackinac Island School. The course takes runners from Windermere Point through a section of downtown before cutting though the center of the Island. The last leg follows Lake Shore Road, along the Straits of Mackinac shoreline, and ends in the schoolyard.

Check-in for the race will take place at Mackinac Island Public School from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. There also is a Lil’ Lilac Kids Race that starts at the school at 11 a.m. Part of money raised from registration fees is donated to the Mackinac Island School Booster Club.

The Lilac Festival 10k is the first in Run Mackinac’s annual series called the 2018 Mackinac Island Trio Series. Participants who run in all three races receive a special “super-sized” Mackinac Trio medal at the end of the final race. The other two races, the Mackinac Island 8 Mile and the Great Turtle Park Half Marathon and 5.7 Mile, take place in September and October, respectively.

Those participants who want to register in advance can do so at Run Mackinac’s Web site, runmackinac.com.
