Lilac Festival Grand Parade Seeks Volunteers

Seventy volunteers are needed to hold up signs and walk with the entries during the Lilac Festival Grand Parade Sunday, June 17. Tim Hygh, executive director at the Tourism Bureau, is taking all necessary measures to make sure that everyone is safe and that the entries are correctly identified.

“Horse safety is our number-one priority,” Mr. Hygh said. “We know that they may be skittish in crowds. If they stop and don’t want to go anywhere, they aren’t going anywhere.”

If the horses stop, the rest of the entries will just proceed around them. As a result, the sequence might be changing sporadically throughout the parade. This would be especially confusing for the parade announcers. The numbered signs held by the volunteer escorts will correspond to an entry in the parade. These are all recorded on a script held by all the announcers.

“With such a large audience, we want to make sure that everything goes smoothly and everyone knows what’s going on,” Mr. Hygh said.

He will provide ferry tickets to volunteers commuting from the mainland.
