Summer Improvements Are Coming to Great Turtle Park

By Marina Lindland

The Recreation Board discussed new changes coming to Great Turtle Park, including a container providing free balls and pet waste receptacles.

Recently, the Recreation Department has had issues with dog owners not picking up their waste, particularly on the soccer field. To rectify this problem, trash cans and bag dispensers will be set up near the soccer field.

Mary Patay, director of the Recreation Department, is eager to implement this change.

“I’m a firm believer in being prepared,” she said. “You’re a pet owner, therefore you should carry stuff with you. I did it for 15 years.”

Several models are being compared for price and function. The Recreation Board all liked a dispenser that read in all capital letters, “Please pick up after your pet.”

“It’s a bit passive-aggressive,” Dr. Patay said, laughing.

These waste receptacles will be installed by the end of the summer.

The Recreation Department is also in the finishing stages of a project that will provide free balls that park goers can use at their own convenience.

“We already have the balls and the cage to put out so people can use it,” Dr. Patay said. “We just need to pour a cement slab down to attach the cage to, so kids can’t pull it down and get hurt.”

The container will be set up near the skate park, located conveniently near all the sports fields. There will be a sign encouraging people to return the balls for others to use.

Although the project is nearly complete, the department is waiting for delivery of the sign and the pouring of the concrete.
