West Michigan BootScooters Party Is Saturday

By Marina Lindland

The West Michigan BootScooters are coming to celebrate the Lilac Festival by dancing in the streets Saturday, June 9. The festivities will take place on Market Street from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., continuing a lively tradition that has been a part of the Grand Haven dance group for the past 18 years.

“It’s good, clean, healthy fun,” Jill Fortenbacher said. “There’s really nothing like it.”

Mrs. Fortenbacher has been an active member of the Western dance club since its inception in 1993 and said that members are looking forward to their arrival at Mackinac Island.

“It really is a family affair over here,” she said. “We have about 42 people coming up, and a lot of them are bringing their kids.”

Adults with BootScooters will teach nine line dances to country and rock music while the children will distribute beads to spectators and participants. Mrs. Fortenbacher expects a large group, saying as many as 275 people were dancing last year.

“We just love getting people involved,” she said. “We’ll play whatever music we have to in order to get everyone in the spirit.”

While she doesn’t sit on the club’s board of directors, Mrs. Fortenbacher is frequently consulted when decisions need to be made. She was active in its formation and its continued success and credits its strength and popularity to strict organization and communication among the club’s leadership.
