Camp Director Sarah Dehring, associate athletics director at Alma College, has been organizing the camp for a number of years as a way to help students in Northern Michigan understand the basic aspects of the game and sharpen their skills.

“I went to high school at Mack- inac Island Public School and there wasn’t a camp near me when I went here,” she said. “It’s really important to me to give them a place close by where they can learn the basics.”

The Mackinac Island camp drew players from Petoskey, St. Ignace, Brimley, and other northern schools.

Ms. Dehring plans another camp at the same time next year.

“We’re hoping to see more younger kids attend so they can learn the basics earlier,” she said.
