NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND

BY MARGARET DOUD

This past week, the weather was very hot and humid. Monday, August 6, a cold front passed through and the temperature cooled down. It feels much more like Mackinac weather. The flowers all over the Island are just gorgeous. The white hydrangeas by Hart’s Haven are the size of small basketballs. Jeff Shaffer’s and Dwight LaPine’s garden on French Lane is so attractive with a variety of colorful flowers. In front of the Island House, it is so inviting with all the bright colors. People enjoy walking around and viewing all the gardens. They love to watch the sunrises and sunsets over the Straits of Mackinac with the colors dancing off the water. It’s August on Mackinac.

The entire Mackinac community extends deepest sympathy to the family of Lawrence “Lumpy” Leveille of St. Ignace, who passed away Wednesday, July 25. He served as the Mackinac County Sheriff for 20 years. He was a great friend to Mackinac Island and will certainly be missed. May he rest in peace. An obituary was published in last week’s issue of the Mackinac Island Town Crier.
