Sailing Season Back at Mackinac for 2018

By Marina Lindland

The Mackinac Island Yacht Club Regatta Committee has created a series of races in store for sailors of all classes and experience levels this summer. All participating boats are required to have a 2018 Performance Handicap Race Factor (PHRF) rating.

The season began with the Pink Pony Fourth of July Race Tuesday, July 3.

The Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race begins Saturday, July 14. The Bayview Yacht Club of Detroit hosts the annual yacht race.

After the 2018 Chicago to Mackinac Race, which is hosted by the Chicago Yacht Club and begins Saturday, July 21, sailors will have the opportunity to see all sides of its finish line in the Chicago Mac Week Round the Island Race on Wednesday, July 25. All sailors in the Straits of Mackinac area are eligible to apply, as well as any racers who participated in the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. The starting line is near the East Breakwater, and at 1 p.m., the participants race around the Island back to the finish line, which is between Windermere Point and the Round Island Light House. Those seeking to enter the race can register online for a fee of $60, which includes tickets to the post-race party at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club. Prizes will be given to first-, second-, and third-place winners.

Saturday, August 11, the Mission Point Mac to Mac Regatta will start at the East Breakwater. The course is 12.5 miles, between the Island and the Mackinac Bridge. Participants will round a green buoy near the Bridge and head back to the finish line in the harbor in front of the Mackinac Island Yacht Club. The post-race party and awards ceremony will take place immediately following the race at The Bistro on the Green at Mission Point. A starting time has not yet been released.

The Horn’s Bar Labor Day Regatta will be held Saturday, September 1. The course will go around the Island, with the same start and finish as the Pink Pony Fourth of July Race. All sailboat classes in the Straits of Mackinac area can register at no charge. Participants can sign up at the noon Captain’s Meeting at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club. Cabin plaques will be given to all participants and the First in Fleet boat will be awarded the Andy Kiener Memorial Trophy. The award ceremony and party will take place immediately following the race at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club. Horn’s Gaslight Bar and the Yacht Club are the sponsors.
