Senior Aaron Riggs (32) jumps for a basket during the game against the Grand Marais Polar Bears Friday, February 1. The Mackinac Island boys are in rebuilding mode, with an inexperienced team and a first-year head coach. The Lakers have shown signs of improvement from the beginning of the season, and despite only having two wins, have been close to winning several other games.

“We play well, especially defensively,” said Lakers Coach Nate Bullard. “We are not scoring enough to compete consistently. We competed with Beaver Island, but just came up short. Grand Marais had really good guard play.”

The Lakers are 2-14 on the season and 2-13 in conference play. Their two wins came January 11 and 12 against Paradise. Senior Aaron Riggs recorded a school singlegame record 14 steals in the second game. Riggs finished with a tripledouble, recording 17 points, 14 steals, and 10 rebounds. After games against Beaver Island January 25 and 26, Riggs was just 72 points away from reaching 1,000 career points. He still has four regular season games, the conference tournament, and the districts to reach that mark. He would need to average about 12 points per game to achieve it.

Albert Mosley has been a consistent inside force, both offensively and defensively. He has several double doubles on the season (doubledigit points and rebounds), including a season-high 18 rebounds against Munising Baptist Friday, January 4. Seventh grader Derby Kromer has been solid from three-point range, and scored his career high of 15 points in the win against Paradise Friday, January 11. Senior Gabe Hepker has been a solid all-around performer as well. The team features many young players, including 10 underclassmen, six of them in middle school. They are sophomores Albert Mosley and John Andress, freshmen Xavier Mosley and Asher Topham, eighth graders Jack Kaminen, Guyil Mosley, and Aidan Ogle, and seventh graders Matthew Cowell, Alique Henlin, and Derby Kromer.

The Lakers have two games at Hannahville Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9, and then a single elimination conference tournament Friday and Saturday, February 15 and 16, at Rudyard High School. The boys and girls will play in separate gymnasiums. The matchups and game times have not yet been announced.
